Fear


According to Cambridge dictionary, " Fear is an unpleasant emotion or thought that you have when you are frightened or worried by something dangerous, painful, or bad that is happening or might happen". Fear is a feeling that something bad might happen in the present or future and it can be accident, death of loved ones and others .It is a traumatic feeling that affects the emotional, psychological and mental health of an individual.


Fear is one of the seven universal emotions experienced by everyone around the world and this makes us human. It has a strong effect on your mind and body. There are so many things that makes us to be fearful. The universal trigger for fear is the threat of harm; real or imagined.


Phobia is under the category of fear. A phobia is an irrational fear of something that is unlikely to cause harm. Phobia cannot be termed the same thing as fear.


Common fear triggers

  • Imagined events
  • Darkness or loss of visibility of surroundings ,especially, after watching horror movies.
  • Scared of the future
  • Social interaction and rejection
  • past events
  • height and flying
  • death

Is fear an illusion?

Some monks or philosophers think that fear is an illusion. It deals with the mind and one should conquer fear by taming the mind. The mind is the greatest weapon and that it is where imagination originates from. Some philosophers state that the acronym of Fear is - False Evidence Appearing Real.
However, fear also has its own functions:

  • Reduces harm: One will be extremely careful in order to prevent evil in the future.
  • Involuntary action: Fear causes one to do something involuntarily. For instance, running fast when one see a snake. This is as a result of adrenaline rush that causes the action.

Symptoms of fear

  • loss of appetite
  • dull face
  • dizziness
  • rapid breathing
  • dry mouth
  • tensed muscles
  • faster heart beat
  • dilation of pupil

Fear affects our mental health issues when it is intense. People should seek the help of psychologists, closer friends  or spiritualists.


How to overcome fear

  • Engage in talking therapies: There is a cliché that states, "a problem shared is half solved". If you talk to your therapist, you will lessen your burden and your mind will be free. 
  • Faith/ spiritualties: If you are a religious person, you can overcome your fears by practicing your faith or religion. For instance, you can go to clergymen for divine intervention.
  • Avoid loneliness: You have to avoid loneliness in order to avoid evil imaginations. When you are in a social gathering, you tend to have less evil imagination.


Fear is in every part of our day-to-day activities and we have to overcome it.
